The Curly Girl Collective is … a united body of natural women, who strive to create innovative experiences that foster acceptance and celebration of curls, kinks and everything in between.
I had the pleasure of attending the Mane Attraction event held at Free Candy in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday, where there was a sea of natural beauties. The event featured various booths with women entrepreneurs, Courvoisier sponsored cocktails, vegan snacks, and a panel of brutally honest individuals. Special thank you to Ebony magazine’s @jamilahlemieux for being a great (blunt and entertaining) moderator!
Walking into a space where everyone looks like you, (I’m exaggerating of course) rocking these full bodied, short cut, curly mops from wall to wall was breathtaking. Honestly. We were there and proud of what we’ve decided to embrace, God’s gift of unique beauty. I especially enjoyed the hair wall where attendees were asked “What makes a woman with natural hair attractive?” The answers varied but the agreed tone was that WE think we are beautiful, not because a man tells us we are.It takes confidence to walk around day in and day out with hairstyles that aren’t readily accepted.
By the end of the evening we’d had a great interactive discussion about the way some feel about the natural hair movement that has resurfaced minus the dashikis and what women are thinking by deciding to shed the perms and weaves.
When you get a chance, head over to CurlyGirlCollective and join the movement. If you’re in NYC perhaps I’ll see you at the next gathering!
